LES CONCERTS DU 7ÈME CIEL - SEASON 1

MICHAEL WOOKEY
August 02, 2008

Since the age of 15, this young English singer-songwriter has created music using guitars, pianos, accordions and a large collection of broken instruments and children's toys. His music, often described as melancholic and surprising, is a bitter-sweet cabaret that could be home to Pascale Comelade or CocoRosie.

Equipped with an acoustic guitar and a very old portable pump organ, one which was used for the funeral services of English soldiers during the two world wars, Michael Wookey surprised us with songs rarely played live and stripped down versions of some of his most cheerful numbers.

Two covers – a very beautiful performance of Leonard Cohen's "Bird on the Wire" and a bewitching version of Tim Buckley's "Song to the Siren" – were also included in a set which, for the first time at 7ème Ciel, was performed in the red living room as opposed to under the heavens, mainly due to the fact that they were about to open!
